MISCONCEPTION: KARNA DID NOT BREAK ABHIMANYU'S BOW FROM BEHIND

KARNA FANS HAVE BROUGHT A PROPAGANDA FROM SANSKRIT EDITION OF MAHABHARAT THAT KARNA DID NOT BROKE ABHIMANYU'S BOW FROM BEHIND.SO LET US TAKE THE SLOKAS FROM SANSKRIT/CRITICAL EDITION-

DRONA PARVA,CHAPTER 47,SLOKA 29,30

29 एतत कुरु महेष्वास राधेय यदि शक्यते
अथैनं विमुखीकृत्य पश्चात परहरणं कुरु

30 सधनुष्कॊ न शक्यॊ ऽयम अपि जेतुं सुरासुरैः
विरथं विधनुष्कं च कुरुष्वैनं यदीच्छसि

TRANSLATION:

DRONA SAYING THIS TO KARNA,ABOUT ABHIMANYU - "O Mighty Bowman,O Son of Radha,If you can do this, make him disinclined from the fight, then attack him from behind, with bow in his hands he is incapable of being vanquished by gods and asuras together"

I have translated the word 'पश्चात' to 'Behind',but some Karna fans say that पश्चात means afterwards, not behind.

For those Karna fans,The term 'Pashchyat' is derived from the word 'Pashchim' which means west(direction),so it means behind though it has another meaning as well which is afterwards.

But for 'afterwards' पश्चात्काले is used or तत् पश्चात् is used, not पश्चात.

MEANING OF पश्चात FROM SANSKRIT DICTIONARY-

पश्चात् : Monier William's Sanskrit-English Dictionary, 2 nd Ed. 1899

(abl. of पश्च) from behind, behind, in the rear, backwards RV. &c.

पश्चात् pazcAt ind. after पश्चात् pazcAt ind. backwards पश्चात् pazcAt ind. afterwards पश्चात् pazcAt ind. later पश्चात् pazcAt ind. behind पश्चात् pazcAt ind. from behind पश्चात् pazcAt ind. to the west पश्चात् pazcAt ind. from or in the west पश्चात् pazcAt ind. westwards पश्चात्

Only if तत् पश्चात् is used it would mean afterwards and as per vyakarana rules as indicated here. .... तत् पश्चात् tat pazcAt phrase later तत् पश्चात् tat pazcAt phrase afterwards

NOW LETS SEE HOW SOME FAMOUS TRANSLATIONS HAVE TRANSLATED 'पश्चात्' WORD-

----------------

1)GEETA PRESS EDITION'S VIEW -

Quoted from Geeta Press,Drona Parva-

"अभिमन्युको युध्दसे विमुख करके #पीछे इसके ऊपर प्रहर करो,धनुष लिये रहनेपर तो इसे सम्पूर्ण देवता और असुर भी नहीं जीत सकते"

As you all can read, geeta press has translated the Sanskrit word पश्चात् as पीछे which means 'From Behind'.

2)SANKCHIPTA EDITION OF GEETA PRESS ALSO USES 'BEHIND (पीछे)'-

Quote-

राधानन्दन ! तुम बड़े धनुर्धर हो; यदि कर सको तो यही करो । सब प्रकारसे असहाय करके इसे रणसे भगओ और पीछे से प्रहार करो ।

3)C. RAJGOPALACHARI'S VIEW -

Chapter 80. THE DEATH OF ABHIMANYU

Narrative:

"It is impossible to pierce this youth's armor," said Drona to Karna. "Aim at the reins of his horses and cut them off. Disable him thus and attack him from #behind."

The son of Surya did accordingly. Abhimanyu's bow was broken by a shaft #discharged#from_behind. His horses and charioteer were killed. Thus disabled, the young warrior stood on the field, with sword and shield, facing his enemies.

ITS CLEARLY WRITTEN THAT ABHIMAYU'S BOW WAS DESTROYED BY KARNA FROM BEHIND.

4)MAHABHARAT TATPARYA NIRNAYA'S VIEW-

Chapter 26. NarayaNAstrOpasamanam

Narrative:

When these were fighting with Jayadratha, Abhimanyu entered deep into Padmavyuha. Drona, Duryodhana, Karna, Shalya, Ashvatthama and Krtavarma surrounded him. They destroyed his bow, arrows and even horses, they hit him from behind. Ultimately they killed him.

MBTN SUMMARY ALSO CLEARLY SAYS THAT ABHIMANYU WAS ATTACKED FROM BEHIND.

NOW LETS SEE WHAT DAKSHINATYA HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS-

5)DAKSHINATYA KUMBAKONAM EDITION,DRONA PARVA,CHAPTER 48

एतत्कुरु महेष्वास राधेय यदि शक्यते।
अथैनं विमुखीकृत्य पश्चात्प्रहरणं कुरु॥ 7-48-29
(This is the same as the one in northern recension, described above)

O Mighty Bowman,O Son of Radha,If you can do this, disable him from the fight, thus attack him from behind.

तदाचार्यवचः श्रुत्वा कर्णो वैकर्तनस्त्वरन्।
अस्यतो लघुहस्तस्य पृष्ठतो धनुराच्छिनत्॥ 7-48-31

Hearing these words of the preceptor, Vikartana's son Karna cut off the bow of Abhimanyu from Behind.

पृष्ठतो also means 'from behind'.
